Best AI Visibility Tools in 2026: Ranked by Who Actually Gets Cited

By GeoHero6 min read

The best AI visibility tools right now, ranked by how often AI engines actually cite each one when a buyer asks for a recommendation, are Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit, Profound, Otterly.AI, Peec AI, and Ahrefs, in that order, based on 240 real prompts we ran through ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity in July 2026. That's a different (and more honest) ranking method than most "best AI visibility tools" lists use, which is usually vendor self-reporting or an affiliate-fee order.

We're one of the tools in this category, so treat that as a disclosed bias, and also why we built the list this way. Instead of writing marketing copy about ourselves and our competitors, we ran the exact test a buyer researching this category would run: asked AI engines who they'd recommend, counted the results, and are publishing where every tool actually landed.

How We Built This List

In July 2026 the GeoHero Research Team ran 20 buying-intent prompts (the kind a real buyer types, like "what tools track AI visibility" or "best alternative to Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit"), through ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity, across three markets, for 240 total responses. We logged every brand each engine named and how often. This is a single measurement run, not an average across repeated tests, so read the percentages as directional rather than fixed to the decimal. We re-run this monthly and will update the ranking as it moves. We cross-checked citation share against each tool's own organic keyword footprint (how many category keywords the domain already ranks for) to separate "AI engines cite this brand" from "this brand also has a large SEO presence," because, as our companion piece on GEO vs. SEO shows. Those two things don't move together.

The Tools, Ranked by Citation Share

1. Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit, cited in 33.3% of responses. Semrush is a broad SEO and marketing suite that added AI-visibility tracking on top of its existing toolkit rather than being built GEO-first. That breadth is likely part of why it leads the leaderboard: it's the incumbent name most AI models already "know" from training data and public mentions, and it shows up across every engine we tested, including a strong 43% citation rate on Perplexity specifically. If you're already a Semrush customer for SEO, the AI-visibility module is the path of least resistance to add citation tracking without a new vendor relationship.

2. Profound, cited in 25.0% of responses. A GEO-native platform built specifically to monitor how brands appear inside AI-generated answers. It's the strongest performer among the purpose-built GEO tools and the only GEO-native brand our AI Overview scan found Google itself citing (14 times across 20 English category queries), a meaningful signal that it has real, indexed public content about the category, not just product pages. It leads or ties for the lead among GEO-native tools on Perplexity (40%) and Gemini (30%).

3. Otterly.AI, cited in 23.3% of responses. The other clear leader among GEO-native tools, and actually the top-cited brand on Perplexity specifically (42%, edging out Profound). Otterly's organic keyword footprint (421 ranked keywords in our scan) is far smaller than the broad incumbents, which makes its citation share notable. It's punching above its organic weight, consistent with a tool built around AI-answer monitoring as the core product rather than an add-on.

4. Peec AI, cited in 19.6% of responses, tied with Ahrefs. A GEO-native tool with consistent, if not category-leading, citation share across every engine we tested (28% on both Perplexity and Gemini), the profile of a solid, generalist option in the GEO-native tier rather than a specialist standout in any one engine.

5. Ahrefs, cited in 19.6% of responses. Like Semrush, Ahrefs is a broad SEO suite, best known for backlink and keyword-research data, that AI engines already associate with the SEO/search category broadly, which likely explains why it gets cited on AI-visibility prompts even without being a GEO-native product. Its citation share is meaningfully lower on Perplexity and Gemini (28% and 21%) than Semrush's, and lower still on ChatGPT (13%).

6. SE Ranking, cited in 15.4% of responses. The most organically dominant player in our entire dataset. It ranks for 27,823 category keywords in our competitor scan, more than every other tool on this list combined, but that scale doesn't translate proportionally into AI citation share, where it trails both Profound and Otterly.AI despite their far smaller organic footprints. It's the clearest evidence in our data that organic SEO scale and AI citation share are genuinely different games.

7. Scrunch AI, cited in 7.5% of responses. A smaller GEO-native tool with a real but modest citation presence, mostly on Gemini and Perplexity. Worth a look if you want a GEO-native option outside the top tier, though the data shows it's not yet where the AI-citation conversation defaults.

The long tail. Writesonic and Geoptie were each cited in 5.0% of responses; AthenaHQ in 3.3%; LLMrefs and Rankscale in 2.9% each; Bluefish AI, Conductor, Knowatoa, Gauge, and Gumshoe each came in at 2.1% or below. All are real, legitimate tools in the category (several with narrow specialties (Geoptie, for instance, runs a well-ranked free GEO audit page)), but at this measurement point none of them are the AI-engine's default recommendation the way the top five are.

What to Actually Check Before Choosing

Whichever tool you land on, verify three things yourself instead of trusting any vendor's homepage claim, including ours: which specific AI engines it monitors (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude each behave differently, our data shows a tool strong on Perplexity can be weak on ChatGPT), whether it separates AI-citation tracking from organic SEO tracking or blends them into one opaque score, and how often it actually re-measures rather than showing you a single stale snapshot. A tool that can't answer those three questions clearly is asking you to trust a black box for a metric that, as this list shows, moves a lot between engines and over time.

For the mechanics behind why citation and organic ranking diverge in the first place, read GEO vs. SEO: what actually changes. If "AEO" is the term you've seen instead of "GEO," they're close enough to be worth reading together, see our AEO tools comparison for the answer-engine-specific angle. And if you're still asking what any of this means at the definition level, start with what generative engine optimization actually is.

Citation data in this piece comes from original research by the GeoHero Research Team: 240 AI-engine responses across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity (20 buying-intent prompts, three markets, July 2026), cross-checked against a competitor organic-ranking scan of 14 domains in the category. This is a single measurement run. We re-run it monthly and will update this article as the leaderboard shifts. No tool on this list is guaranteed a citation or a ranking; we're reporting what happened when we asked, not what any vendor promises will happen.
