The keyword this article targets, "generative engine optimization GEO tools," gets 170 monthly U.S. searches at a keyword difficulty of just 6, four niche competitors already rank for it (TryProfound, Otterly.AI, AthenaHQ, and WithGauge), but the current top result is a blog post from TryProfound sitting at position 4, not a comprehensive category map, which is the specific gap this piece fills.

Tier 1: GEO-Native Trackers

These tools were built from day one to answer one question: is my brand showing up in AI-generated answers? Citation tracking is the core product, not a feature bolted onto something else.

  • Profound: the strongest GEO-native performer in our data, cited in 25.0% of the 240 responses overall, and the only GEO-native brand our AI Overview scan found Google itself citing (14 times across 20 English category search queries).   • Otterly.AI: cited in 23.3% of responses, and actually the single most-cited brand on Perplexity specifically (42%, edging out Profound). Its organic footprint (421 ranked keywords in our scan) is far smaller than the broad suites below, which makes its citation share notable. It's punching above its organic weight.
  • Peec AI: cited in 19.6%, tied with Ahrefs overall. Consistent, if not category-leading, across every engine we tested (28% on both Perplexity and Gemini), a solid generalist option within this tier rather than a specialist standout on any one engine.
  • Scrunch AI: cited in 7.5%, with its strongest presence on Gemini and Perplexity. A real but modest citation footprint; worth a look if the top three don't fit your budget or workflow.
  • AthenaHQ, LLMrefs, Rankscale, Bluefish AI, Knowatoa, Gumshoe: each cited at 3.3% or below in our July 2026 run. Real, legitimate GEO-native tools, several with narrow specialties, but at this measurement point none has broken into the conversation the way the top three have.

Tier 2: Broad SEO Suites with AI Visibility Added

These are the incumbents, large, established SEO platforms that added AI-citation tracking as a module rather than a ground-up product.

  • Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit: the overall category leader in our data, cited in 33.3% of the 240 responses. That lead is likely a function of incumbency: Semrush is a name most AI models already "know" from training data and broad public mentions, and it performs consistently across every engine we tested, including a strong 43% on Perplexity specifically.
  • Ahrefs: cited in 19.6%, tied with Peec AI. Best known for backlink and keyword-research data, and its citation share is meaningfully lower on Perplexity and Gemini (28% and 21%) than Semrush's, lower still on ChatGPT (13%).
  • SE Ranking (the single most organically dominant domain in our entire dataset, ranking for 27,823 category keywords) more than every other tool on this list combined, but that scale doesn't translate proportionally into AI-citation share, where it trails both Profound and Otterly.AI despite their far smaller organic footprints. Tier 3: Adjacent and Niche Tools

A smaller group worth knowing even though none currently shows strong citation share in our data: Writesonic and Geoptie were each cited in 5.0% of responses; Geoptie specifically runs a well-ranked free GEO audit page worth studying as a distribution tactic even if its citation share is modest. Conductor and Gauge appear with minimal citation presence but occupy narrower workflow niches (enterprise content operations and prompt-tracking dashboards, respectively) that a strict citation-share ranking undersells.

Organic Footprint by Tool: A Different Lens Than Citation Share

One more data point worth including in a full category map: how much organic SEO real estate each tool already occupies, independent of AI-citation performance. In our competitor scan, the range is wide. Among broad SEO suites, SE Ranking ranks for 27,823 category keywords and Writesonic for 3,447: both dwarfing every GEO-native tool. Among GEO-native tools specifically, LLMrefs ranks for 2,623 keywords, TryProfound for 1,270, Otterly.AI for 421, Peec AI for 257, Rankscale for 202, Scrunch AI for 188, WithGauge for 166, and AthenaHQ for 149. At the smaller end, Geoptie ranks for 46, Knowatoa for 22, Gumshoe for 14, and Bluefish AI for just 1.

The reason this matters for a category map specifically: organic footprint size doesn't predict citation share. LLMrefs has the largest organic footprint of any GEO-native tool in our scan, yet its overall citation share (2.9%) trails Otterly.AI (23.3%), whose organic footprint is roughly one-sixth the size. Why the Tiers Don't Rank the Same Way

The pattern across both this map and our companion best AI visibility tools ranking is consistent: the broad SEO suites (Semrush, Ahrefs) lead on raw citation share overall, largely on the strength of incumbency and broad training-data presence, while GEO-native tools are closing the gap fastest on the two engines where a purpose-built product seems to matter most, Perplexity (Otterly.AI 42%, Profound 40%) and Gemini (Otterly.AI 32%, Profound 30%).
