AI Overviews
Google's AI-generated summary that appears above the traditional search results for many queries, synthesizing an answer from several already-ranking pages and citing a handful of them directly.
Definition
AI Overviews are the AI-generated summary Google shows above the traditional results for many searches, synthesizing an answer from multiple web sources and citing a subset of them directly beneath it.
They work in two layers: a query first has to be eligible to trigger an AI Overview at all, then the summarization system reads several of the pages already ranking well for that query and writes one synthesized answer. A page that is not already well-indexed and reasonably well-ranking has little chance of entering that second layer, regardless of how well-written its content is.
AI Overviews are one of the Search-AI surfaces this site measures separately from chat engines (see Engine Family): a summary embedded inside a familiar results page, not a conversational answer.

Grounding
Whether an AI answer draws on live web retrieval (a grounded, or retrieval-augmented, answer) versus fixed training-time knowledge. Changes what optimization work can influence, and how fast.
